When we first started working for Stephen Godfrey Dental Care, they had a handful of computers, but the IT system was ill-suited to this leading dental practice.
They now have what is probably one of the best IT systems in any dental practice in the UK. As well as having practice management software for clinical records, patient management and the appointment book, the practice is fully paperless: all referral letters, radiographs and medical histories are scanned onto the system. Images of the patients are taken at the front desk with a web-cam. Sophisticated digital radiography and intra-oral cameras are fully integrated into the IT system; all data resides centrally on the servers, with the images linked to patient records, and accessible from all workstations. Images from a digital camera are recorded from the operating microsope, and entered into the specialist Endodontic software. Recalls and reminders are sent via email and SMS text message, and they have their own email server onsite. All the staff have individual roaming logons, to allow for secure personal and sensitive data. Thorough gigabit networking gives maximum performance.
This practice has two high end, HP Proliant Xeon-based fully redundant file servers, each with hardware RAID, huge disk capacity, and fast reliable backup on each server. There are 14 client machines, to support all the surgeries, reception, backoffice, and seminar room areas, with laptops available as immediate hot spares. An industrial firewall protects the network, while allowing for a separate public WIFI hotspot, and the ability for key staff to work securely from home. Net Therapy monitor and backup the network remotely via broadband.
